Good Standing in the University Honors Program
Each semester, your engagement in these three areas is assessed. The quality of your experience will be best understood by you and will eventually be described and discussed in your senior portfolio. In the meantime, it is efficient for me to quantifiably measure and assess your progress before pre-registration each semester. This is how.
Academics The UHP curriculum includes eight courses. Steady progress to graduation with Honors distinction means taking one honors course per semester on average (if you expect to graduate in four years). Once you have completed your UHP courses, you are not required to continue taking UHP courses, but you may. You must maintain a good GPA, which is a 3.0 overall and a 3.2 in honors courses.
Community Service and Participation in the Student Association All honors students develop a sense of citizenship through steady participation in civic engagement. All students, as a minimum, participate in one UHP service project each semester, attend at least one UHPSA meeting, and participate in one UNC Charlotte Food Run. This active engagement is continuous from semester to semester. If the Food Runs conflict with course schedules, you should contact me. This participation is in addition to the Community Service class.
Cultural Experiences UHP plans several enrichment experiences exclusively for honors students throughout the year. Examples of these experiences include the summer reading, faculty/student Discussion Night, and celebrations. Everyone is expected to attend these special events. Special weekend trips and Study Abroad which require additional expenses are optional and encouraged. There are many other campus events and local events. Choose one cultural enrichment event each semester beyond the ones offered by the University Honors Program. These might include, but are not limited to guest speakers and lectures, plays, concerts, and art exhibits; art crawls, film festivals, and any activity which exposed you to new cultures, points of view, or people. In sum, a sample semester includes an honors class, one service project, one meeting, one independent cultural event, and participation in UHP events. Members in good standing are eligible for Priority Registration. Feel free to invite an honors faculty member to also mentor your plans, reflections, and visions for your future.
Honors Probation A student who falls below "Good Standing" standards is given a one-semester grace period in which to improve. Students on Honors Probation may retain currently registered honors courses and maintained current Honors College residency. A student on probation will have only one semester eligibility of priority registration, under the assumption that a "better" schedule will lead to better results. A student on probation must be active in the student association, attending 50% of the meetings and participating in 50% of the planned functions. However, if a student does not make progress in the next semester, he/she will be removed from the program, but may reapply when appropriate. If the student does not meet the Academic, Service, or Enrichment standards after one year, he/she is removed from the program. At any time, a student can withdraw from the program by notifying the director.
